A new large facility was built by Taylor County, IA in 1980 located on the northeast corner of Lenox, IA and continued to be managed by Taylor County. However costs were starting to grow as the county was responsible for medical treatments, medications and clients had no spending money for essentials like clothing or grooming supplies.
In 1991, Taylor Ridge Estates, Inc. was established as a private, not for profit 501(c) 3, management company. We provided food, shelter/utilities, healthcare and supervision to members qualifying for Social Security State Supplemental Assistance (SSA), which relieved Taylor County of the medical expense and risk of managing the former ‘county home’.
In 2012, the Taylor Ridge Estates’ Board of Directors had to make the tough decision to restructure our services without the care facility building. Little did they know this would prove to be the best decision they ever made. Iowa was redesigning the mental health system and information from the Department of Human Services (DHS) was plans to phase out “institutional” environments meaning Care Facilities over 16 beds. Due to the Federal Olmstead Act and the 2012 Iowa Mental Health Redesign, funding was rerouted from the county to the state for members to live more naturally in a home within the community. In January, 2013, the Board of Directors made a strategic plan to change the name of our management company to "Pursuit of Independence" to better suit our mission statement. In May 2015, we purchased Terrace View Residential Care Facility in Clarinda to increase services. We now provide hourly, daily services, supported employment and habilitation services with our 80+ employees in the communities of Lenox, Bedford, Clarinda and Creston.
In 2018, a decision was made by the Board of Directors to move forward with being acquired by Genesis Development, a not-for-profit organization whose values align closely with POI’s. With this change came some re-structuring within the organization but still the same great services provided to our members!
Corporate Business Office
Following the closing of the RCF on June 30, 2012, the Administration staff were relocated to a temporary location on Main Street. Nearly one and a half years later, the construction on the new office building began. The new office is in a prime location for conducting business as it is directly behind the Independence Center, which houses the day hab, and hourly programs. A ground breaking ceremony for the new Corporate Business Office was held on July 30, 2013.
